ELLE UKRAINE PRESENTS AN ISSUE DEDICATED TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

18 March 2024

When preparing the spring issue, the editorial team of ELLE Ukraine decided to experiment and devoted the new issue to the topic of artificial intelligence, which is now covering more and more areas of our lives.

"In this issue, we not only wanted to introduce you to the latest trends in the field of AI, but also decided to give it a little more power, i.e., let it take part in the creation of certain materials. We promise you many surprises, including the cover of this issue, which was generated using digital technologies. And a special word in the role of "guest editor," comments Sonya Zabuga, the editor-in-chief of the publication.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rather sensitive area for humanity. The term was first used in 1956 by the American John McCarthy: he described a branch of computer science aimed at equipping machines with human abilities. Controversial and heated debates about the risks of this technology have been going on for many years. In 2022, these discussions were stirred up with renewed vigor by the emergence of the ChatGPT chatbot: it can create text in a few seconds that is hard to distinguish from the original human text. Let's recall the recent situation with writer Rie Kudan, the winner of Japan's most prestigious Akutagawa Prize: the author admitted that she wrote her novel with the help of ChatGPT. Later, the organizers of the Akutagawa Prize refused to comment on the situation. To be fair, our country has very ambitious goals for artificial intelligence.

As Mykhailo Fedorov, Vice Prime Minister for Innovation, Education, Science and Technology Development, Minister of Digital Transformation, recently emphasized, "Ukraine should lead the AI trend in the world. We need to understand what is happening, react quickly, and have our own strategy." Ukrainians are already applying AI in medicine, the film industry, gaming, education, and at the frontline. Our AI specialists are also known abroad. For instance, Ukrainian startup Respeecher creates voices for Hollywood using AI. And the projection navigation solutions developed by Apostera, a former Ukrainian startup, can be found in cars of global concerns. And these are just the most famous examples. Currently, many scientists at various research institutions are working on AI in Ukraine. Several dozens of companies engaged in the development of AI models are registered in Ukraine. In addition to all of the above, science parks are emerging in our country, including Academ.City based at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. This park, a kind of analog of Silicon Valley, created under the influence of the Adlershof Science Park in Berlin, has an ambitious goal to push knowledge-intensive industries (AI, biotechnology, green energy) and become the levers that will allow Ukraine to build an innovative knowledge-based economy. By the way, Academ.City was initiated and headed by a well-known Ukrainian scientist, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics Oleksandra Antoniuk.
