WEnnovate dialogue on deep tech innovations for energy transition in the Netherlands, Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine

22 August 2024

Key stakeholders in the Netherlands, Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine gathered for eight workshops to analyze and discuss the potential of deep tech and digital innovations in accelerating energy transition.

Ukraine: Innovating Through Adversity in the Energy Sector

The ongoing war has put Ukraine's energy sector under immense strain, with infrastructure damage posing significant challenges. Yet, amid these difficulties, Ukraine is demonstrating resilience and can drive forward with innovative solutions focused on transforming its energy systems, embracing green technologies, and advancing digital transitions.

Ukraine’s current priority is the introduction of decentralized solutions for the energy sector.  The Dolyna Community Smart Grid proves that this is the right way to address the challenges and an appropriate ground for testing innovative solutions, which can be further replicated in communities and cities across the country.

"Pilot projects are the priority. It is necessary to focus on pilot projects, because we all understand that practice is the criterion of truth" (Leonid Unigovskyi, Naftogasbudinformatyka)

Ukraine has a very strong academic and entrepreneurial potential. Kyiv Academic University and Academ.City delivers and supports projects which help foster innovation in the energy sector through science-business collaboration. The two stakeholder groups work together to expand the testbeds’ facilities and develop science-based solutions in terms of both - technology and policy.

Access to data: priority across Europe

Timely and accurate data on energy generation and consumption is a key to an effective and efficient transition of the energy sector, acknowledged by all partner countries.

Energy Data Hub in Hungary is a good example of how to integrate data from smart meters and sensors into the grid management system in Hungary.

In Ukraine, Advisor Scada is developing an innovative energy efficiency tachometer aimed at optimizing energy consumption, with a target of achieving a 30% reduction in energy use.

The Netherlands, being the most advanced among the partners in terms of energy system digitalization, has challenges in getting access to data generated by individual consumers and households.
