The course of lectures METHODS OF STUDYING THE PROPERTIES, STRUCTURE AND COMPOSITION OF STEELS AND ALLOYS provides a comprehensive overview of methods for studying the chemical composition, structure and properties of steels and alloys, and includes the practical skills necessary to conduct laboratory research and analyze data. This knowledge will contribute to a deeper understanding of materials and prepare you to solve fundamental and practical problems in the field of modern materials science.

Accessibility: self-study based on video and text materials on the platform eduportal.kau.org.ua, passing the final test;

Lecturer: Doctor of Technical Sciences, Valerii Kostin, Leading Researcher at the E.O. Paton Institute of Electric Welding of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Metal Science and Heat Treatment of Metals), Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science of the Kyiv Polytechnic University


Required knowledge:

Physics, mathematics, crystal structure of metals and alloys, heat treatment of metals and alloys, methods of studying the properties of alloys.

Skills acquired:

  • Students will acquire skills in understanding the physical and physicochemical processes that determine the composition, structure and properties of various materials;
  • understanding of methods for determining structure and properties;
  • knowledge of the equipment used to determine the chemical composition of steels and alloys, study the structure and properties of materials of various classes;
  • skills in preparing samples for research by various methods; 
  • skills in conducting basic research by methods of physical materials science, calculating the phase composition of 2- and 3-component systems, analyzing the processes of material fracture during static, dynamic, fatigue and corrosion tests.


The course is free of charge. After completing the course, all participants who complete the program and pass the test will receive certificates with ECTS credits (0.5 credits).
